Labrador Retriever’s have carried the distinction of being the number one most popular dog in the world for the past three years. The origin of these dogs can be traced back to the Canadian island of Newfoundland during the sixteenth century. Labrador Retrievers were also bred as working dogs, much like the German Shepherd.

Like the German Shepherd, Labrador Retrievers are not the best breed of dogs for passive dog owners. These dogs thrive on being the center of attention. They absolutely love being around families and are known for being well behaved, and great with kids. Unfortunately in the past few years these dogs have gotten a bad rap when it comes to questionable behavior. Labs are extremely intelligent animals, and are easily trainable. It’s for this reason that the Labrador Retriever is also a popular choice among military and law enforcement organizations.
Because Labrador retrievers are well-behaved and affectionate dogs, they lavish love on their owners, and want the same in return. These animals thrive in homes where they are loved and appreciated.
Feeding Your Labrador Retriever
Labrador puppies normally fare better when fed about three times a day. Normally those feedings should reduce as they get older. From my experience, by the time your animal is about six months old, twice a day feedings are recommended. Scan the box or bag to see what percentage of food is usually advised for your dog’s weight, then divide that amount into two or three meals. The amount of food should be based on the dogs weight.
It is always a good idea to talk to your veterinarian if you have any concerns. It is also recommended that you feed your dog about the same time every day.
Some people only feed their dogs a natural raw diet because they believe it is healthier for the dog. Breeders are often divided into two groups, those who provide a natural raw diet, and those who feed them pet food. You’ll also hear a lot of outlandish claims about the advantages of one procedure over the other. The fact is, that there is no scientific evidence that any one pet food is better for your dog’s long-term health, or that raw feeding is any better. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Choose high-quality Food
Whether you feed your dog wet or dry food is entirely up to you. If you choose, you can have a grain-free meal. If you decide to change your dogs food it is always advisable to consult with your dogs doctor. Gradual transition is always advisable when changing your animals diet. Even if your Labs diet in not of the highest quality, you should not switch her too soon. The reason is that this could cause indigestion, diarrhea, or any other negative response. When transitioning, begin by feeding a blend of 3/4 of the previous meal, and1/4 of the new menu to ease into it. This could take at least three weeks.
Give your Labrador Retriever dog only a few treats at a time. You can give your puppy plain pigeon breast, cheese, grilled carrots or sweet potatoes, or a portion of a cooked egg. Stay away from anything containing sugar or chocolates. Some table foods may contain onion, garlic, or other elements that could be toxic your Lab.
Feeding in his crate
Some puppies will guard their food by growling. This happens if he is accustomed to eating alone, and is suddenly required to eat in front of others. Don’t be alarmed if your puppy begins to defend their food, it’s a simple problem to solve. It might be beneficial to give your puppy some of his meals in the puppy crate, especially if it is unclear to him whether or not the container is safe place. Raising a lab puppy in an apartment is easier with a crate and with proper training techniques. There are several good books out there on training your dog,
Choosing the Proper Food (and water) Bowls
When it comes to choosing a feeding dish for your puppy, you have many options. If you want, you may just feed your puppy from one of your own plates or bowls. My own choice is for a simple chrome steel bowl. They’re dishwasher safe, will not break, and will endure for a long time. The only drawback is that as the puppy follows the empty bowl around the kitchen, there will be a slight clinking sound. The dog food you close to feed him will significantly impact your Labrador Retriever puppy’s growth. Choose wisely and research your choices.
To be honest, there are many excellent feeding dishes on the market. Its your personal preference, Do your research and find the one that is right for you and your pup. There are automatic feeders, elevated feeder, plastic ceramic or whatever your choice may be. I prefer a large ceramic bowl for water since it will be difficult for your dog to tip it over.

Bathing Your Labrador
Consult your groomer or you Vet on the frequency of bathing your Labrador Retriever. Wash his face and any unclean patches of his fur with dog wipes or a damp cloth. Baby wipes should not be used since they contain chemical substances that might be harmful to your dog if licked.
Even though your pet enjoys swimming and splashing in the water, the shampoo used during a shower will remove natural oils ,and cause wetness in his undercoat, which should normally remain dry. If he isn’t unclean, bathing him once a quarter, or even once every six months would suffice.
Wet down your dog with lukewarm water. If it’s hot outside during the summer, you’ll be able to utilize the hose. Only use dog shampoo.
Shampoo designed for humans is not recommended for your dog’s coat and skin.
Massage the shampoo into his tresses. Shampoo should not be used on his ears or cheeks. Rinse well. Leave no remnants of shampoo on your dog’s body as it dries, since this might produce a haptic sense.
Wipe your lab’s ears and cheeks with a damp cloth. Dry your dog with a towel. You should use towels to get as much water off of him as possible. Your retriever can shake off a lot of water by shaking his fur. You can use a hairdryer on low heat if he tolerates it, but if he doesn’t, just let him dry naturally.
Cleaning Your Labrador Retrievers Crate
Once a month, remove the plastic beneath the crate. It may be cleaned in the vessel or outside with fresher water. Make certain to clean it properly and totally dry it.
Pull the crate away from the wall and clean or vacuum behind it, as your retriever is likely to shed. Mop the floor, replace the blankets, and reassemble the crate.
Read a book about how to care for dogs. If possible, look for one that focuses on care for Labrador retrievers. This might educate you on how to keep your new pet healthy.
Take him to the vet regularly. Puppies need to be seen by the vet every few months for immunizations, but adults only need to be seen once a year
Monitor Your Dogs Weight
Excess weight can lead to various complications, including inflammatory illness and cardiac difficulties. To avoid this, control their food and give them a variety of workouts to burn off those calories.
Exercise
Labradors are a high-energy breed that need lots of activity to be physically and mentally fit. If they aren’t active on a regular basis, they will grow bored, and exhibit hazardous behavior as a result of their suppressed energy. They will almost certainly gain weight.
A solid half-hour of exercise every day, in addition to his usual walks, is the bare minimum. Even more if you don’t have a nice yard for them to run around in, with a long session of 1 to 5 hours a week.
Puppies do not require or desire as much exercise. They need some, but for a few minutes a few times a day. Excessive puppy training can lead to skeletal development abnormalities which play an important role in joint disorders.
Take it easy with your puppy until he or she is at least a year old.

Taking care of a Labrador’s ears isn’t only about keeping them clean and healthy. However, it additionally allows you to inspect the area, ensuring that there aren’t any pests present, such as fleas or ticks, and that there aren’t any symptoms of illness.
Check your dog’s ears after every walk, especially when they’ve gone through the bush, been damp, or had a particularly messy outside adventure. Look for ticks and dirt in particular.
Trimming Their Nails
It’s critical to keep your lab’s nails trimmed at all times. Their footpads will be driven apart if they grow too long, and they will be unable to walk appropriately. When the nails are left alone for an extended period, they might cause bone harm due to their unusual stride while walking.
